WICHITA FALLS, TX—The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has recognized the Zales Building as a significant part of Texas history by awarding it an Official Texas Historical Marker.
Originally built in 1884, the building had a series of owners and renovations. On March 29, 1924, Morris and William Zale opened the first Zales Jewelry Store in the space. Inventory included small appliances, cameras and cookware, in addition to jewelry. Since that time, the company has expanded to nearly 800 stores. In 2013, Downtown Wichita Falls Development purchased the building. Over the last 3 years, the exterior has been painstakingly restored in accordance with Wichita Falls Landmark Commission guidelines.
“We are so proud of how much attention and interest this community has given this project. We hope the Zales Building will become an anchor for downtown business. As we look forward to the future of Downtown Wichita Falls, it’s important that our fascinating history is recognized and remembered,” Downtown Wichita Falls Development Executive Director Cynthia Laney said.
A dedication ceremony will be held on May 19th at 10:30 a.m. at 8th and Ohio. Downtown Wichita Falls Development would like to welcome the public to participate in this exciting historical event. Special thanks to the M.B. and Edna Zale Foundation for providing funding for the marker, and making this dedication possible. Downtown Wichita Falls Development appreciates the contributions of the Texas Jewish Historical Society for their work in coordinating and spearheading the historical significance of Zale’s first store, along with the Wichita County Historical Commission. We would also like to thank the Museum of North Texas History and Becky Trammel for their research and wording for the Historical Marker.

A subject qualifies for a marker if two basic criteria are met: historical significance and age. Historical significance is established by reviewing its role and importance in local history, and the age requirement depends on the topic.
